Kerala Governor will visit Payyanur on 21st January, 2004

Payyanur: The Kerala Governor, Shri Sikhandar Bakth will visit Payyanur on 21st January, 2004 for laying the foundation stone for the Sankaracharya Sanskrit University, Payyanur Local Center Building. The function will be presided over by Education Minister Shri Nalakathu Soopy. T. Govindan MP, Sreemathi Teacher MLA, OV Narayanan, District Collector KS Srinivas, TI Madhusoodhanan, Prof. KN Panicker, Dr. VA Abdul Jaleel etc., will also attend the function.


Parishad Dist Conference at Payyanur

Payyanur: The Kannur district conference of Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad will be held at Payyanur on 10th and 11th of January,2004. Heated discussions are expected during the two day long conference on the recent issues of MP Parameshwarn's theory on the 4th world, Foreign funding and allegations against the Janakeeyasoothranam etc.

KEN Kunhahammad will inaugurate the conference at 10 am on 10th January at Vellur Govt High School. A sastra jatha will be held at Vellur on the same day evening. CP Narayanan will take classes the social impact of modernisation processes at the conference.


Ezhimala Will Be Developed Into A Tourist Spot: Navy

Payyanur: Ezhimala Naval Academy will be made the most sought tourist spot of the country- informed South Zone Naval Command Flag Officer Yashwant Prasad. He was talking after laying the foundation stone for the housing complex at Ezhimala. The housing complex ,being constructed at a cost of Rs.67 crores will have 780 houses. The visitors will be allowed in batches and will have the faciltiy to see the academy sorrundings in special vechicle and also will be allowed to enter selected training centres.


He also stated that the plan to form the Ezhimala Development Authority is under the consideration of the government. The authority will include people's representatives of the local bodies. The central government has given approval for new project of Rs. 500.96 crores for the construction works of the Academy. The candidates passing out from the academy will be offered B.Tech degree instead of B.Sc.


Free Cardiac Check-Up Camp

Payyanur: Payyanur Chamber of Commerce in association with the Sahakarana Hridayalaya of Pariyaram Medical College is conducting a free cardiac checkup camp at Payyanur on 25th January,2004. Interested persons can register their names at the office of the chamber of commerce or at various medical shops of Payyanur.


Madayi Co-operative Bank Election

Payyanur: All CPM candidates have been elected unanimously to the director board of Madayi Co-operative Rural Bank. KV Balan Master has been reelected as the president and CV Kunhiraman as vice president.


Dist Youth Festival At Payyanur

Payyanur: The Kannur district schools youth festival will be held at Payyanur from 12th to 15th of January,2004. Balakalotsavam, Sanskritotsavam, Arabic Festival and TTI festival also will be held along with this. About 5000 students from 15 sub-districts will participate in the festival.

PK Sreemathi MLA will formally inaugurate the festival at 4 pm on 13th January and T.Govindan MP will preside over the function. The closing cermony will be inaugurated by K Sudhakaran, the minister for forests at 5 pm on 15th January. OV Narayanan , the district Panchayath president will preside over the closing ceremony. AP Abdullakutty MP will distribute the prizes to the winners.

Payyanur is hosting the district schools youth festival after a long gap of 11 years. The vegetables, coconut and banana leaves required to provide food for the participants have been arranged by the students of the eastern-hilly areas of the district. Various competitions will be held on five different venues

Kandoth Kaliyattam Begins Tomorrow

Payyanur: The annual festival (kaliyattam) of Kandoth Sree Koormba Bhagavathy temple will begin on this saturday, the 10th January 2004. Various theyyams like Puliyoorkali, Pullikarimkali, Pulikandan, Pulimaruthan, Kaalapuli, Maarapuli, Karinthiri Nair and Pulikeezhil will be performed during the festival. Ganamela will be held at 11 pm on 10th January. Professional drama, Kazcha varavu and fireworks will be held on the night of 11th Sunday.


National Mathematics Seminar At Payyanur College

Payyanur: A national mathematics seminar on " Fuzzy Mathematics and Application" began at Payyanur College. Dr PK Rajan, the vice chancellor of Kannur University inaugurated the 3-day long seminar. Dr KH Subrahmanyan, the registrar of Kannur varsity offered the main speech. T. Thrivikraman, the acting president of Kerala Mathematics Association presided over the function. College Principal KV Narayanan, Ancykutty Joseph, AC Sukumaran Nambiar and NV Prakashan offred felicitations. NV Kannan welcomed the function and Dr. TV Ramakrishnan offered vote of thanks.

Dr. MS Sreeram (Madras University), Dr SS Benjali (Karantak University), Dr AR Rajan (Kerala University), Dr MI Jinnah presented various subjects in the seminar. About 150 selected candidates from all over India are participating in the seminar.

Dr MN Narayanan Namboothiri (CUSAT), Dr AK Sreevasthava(Banaras Hindu University), Dr M Tamban Nair (IIT Chennai) offered speeches in the seminar in today's session.


Hudco Financing For Payyanur Raliway Over Bridge

Payyanur: A railway over bridge at Kotty,-the long cherished dream of Payyanur is coming to reality. Kotty overbridge is one among the 15 over brdiges for which HUDCO will give a financing of Rs.99.4 crores. The project will be carried out by the Roads & Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala.


History Of Trade Unions In Malabar Released

Payyanur: The history of trade unions in Malabar- a book written by the CPM leader of Payyanur GD Nair was formally released at a function held at Payyanur yesterday. KN Raveendranath, the state president of CITU formally released the book and C Krishnan received the first copy. EP Karunakaran presided over the function. Dr VV Kunhikrishnan introduced the book. T.Govindan MP,Adv Ajayakumar also addressed the function.

Gandhi Mavu - Memorial for Independence Movement

Payyanur: At Payyanur, the historical place for independence movement, the famous Gandhi Mavu at Srinarayanashram planted by Mahatma Gandhi is standing high as the living memory of Indian independence movement. Mahatma Gandhi visited Srinarayana Vidyalayam on 12th January, 1934.

It was at the request of Swami Anandatheerthar, Mahatma Gandhi, who was on a visit to Kannur in connection with the collection of funds for the under privileged, visited Ashrama Vidyalayam at Payyanur. Mahatma Gandhi alighted the train at Payyanur Railway Station at about 12.00 noon, reached Ashramam by bare foot. Gandhiji entered the prayer room of the Ashramam and spent some time with the children. Later he wrote in the guest book in Hindi - " Let this Ashram foster good Harijan Volunteers".

The Malgoa Mango Tree plant kept ready by Swamiji was planted by Gandhiji at the South side of the Ashram and supplied water to it. Swamiji and the residents of the Ashram nurtured the Mango Tree and known it as Gandhi Mavu. Gandhi Mavu is now completing 70 years. This Mango Tree produces Mangoes at various times in a year.

It was in 1998, the Gandhi Smrithi Mandapam was erected near the Gandhi Mavu. After the expiry of Gandhiji, Kelappaji brought the "Chitha Bhasmam" of Gandhiji and was handed over to Swamiji. Swamiji preserved this "Chitha Bhasmam" in his room. This "Chitha Bhasmam" was deposited under the Smrithi Mandapam.

As a memorial to the independence struggle, Gandhi Mavu is standing high.


Police Arrests Municipal Councilor

Payyanur: Police arrested KV Surendran, the councilor of Payyanur municipality in connection with the murder attempt on E Krishnan Poduval a memebr of the administrative committee of Payyanur Service Co-op Bank. He was arrested from a lodge at Kannur yesterday night.


Negligence in Road Construction - Nightmare for Travellers

Payyanur: Negligence on the part of the authority in completing the road expansion works from Kothayi Mukku to Vadavanthur on Payyanur-Cherupuzha Road became a nightmare for the road users. By unloading boulders and red earth on the roadside for the construction of culverts, the road has become unsuitable even for pedestrians. The road expansion work is being carried without relocating the electric and telephone posts.

If the electric and telephone posts are not relocated from the expanded road, the road expansion work, even when completed, will not serve any purpose.

Chitrakala Academy Camp At Payyanur

Payyanru: G. Karthikeyan, the minister for cultural affairs inaugurated the state level chitra-shilpa kala camp at Payyanur yesterday. The camp is being organised by the Kerala Lalita Kala Academy. Academy Chairman Kanayi Kunhiraman presided over the function held at Jayapala Panikkar Nagar set up at Mascot Auditorium- Kandoth. The camp will conclude on 7th of this month.


Meenkulam Temple Festival

Payyanur: The festival of Meenkulam Srikrishna temple will be held from 17th to 23rd January. Apart from the rituals various cutlural programs are also arranged during the festival.


Obiturary

N. Gopalakrishna Shenoy

Payyanur: N. Gopalakrishna Shenoy (51), the veteran merchant of Payyanur died at Payyanur yesterday. Shenoy popularly known as Gopli was the managing diector of K.Lakshman Shenoy & Sons company.

Pappinisseri Narayanan Nair

Korom: Retired teacher and CPI leader Pappinisseri Narayanan Nair (75) died at Korom yesterday.


Dance Program Today

Kannur: Noted classical dancer Vasundhara Doraiswami will present dance-night today at Kannur. The students of Lasya Kalakshetra , Pilathara will also join her for the program which is being arranged as part of the Agrifest.
