Pothera Krishnanezhuthachan Death Anniversary

Payyanur: The 39th death anniversary of Pothera Krishnanezhuthachan- the wellknown astrolger and scholar of Payyanur will be observed at Payyanur on 19th January. Pushparchana in the Ezhuthachan's Smaraka Mandapam near Govt Hospital will be held at 9 am in the morning. KPCC General Secretary KP Kunhikannan will inaugurate the memorial function at 3.30 pm. KK Narayana Poduval, Dr E Sreedharan, Dr RC Karipathu, AV Govindan Adiyodi,Sadanam Narayanan, CP Kunhirama Panikkar and P.Balan Master will address the meeting.


Kanthalot Kunhambu dead

Kannur: The veteran Communist and former Forest Minister, Kanthalot Kunhambu, died at his residence in Keecheri near here tonight. He was 87. Kanthalot, as he was popularly known, had been in and out of hospital for the past few months. The end came at 9-30 p.m.

Born on December 8, 1916 at Pappinissery, Kanthalot Kunhambu got his training under a well-known local Ayurveda practitioner after completing his lower primary education. Attracted to the activities of the local Congress workers, he had taken part in the toddy shop picketing in 1930.

Kanthalot who was sent to jail in May 1948 for his political involvements, after release, become the member of the Communist Party's Chirakkal taluk committee. Following the party split in 1964, he stood with the CPI and served as the party's district secretary. He had became the Forest Minister in the K. Karunakaran-headed Ministry that had come to power in 1977. He had also visited the erstwhile Soviet Union. He is survived by his wife, Yashoda Teacher. They had no children.

B.Sajithlal, the co-ordinator of Payyanur Dot Com vistited Kanathlot's house to pay the last tribute and conveyed our condolences.


Dist Youth Festival: Payyanur Champions

Payyanur: Payyanur subdistrict won the overall championship in the Kannur district schools youth festival concluded at Payyanur yesterday. Payyanur grabbed the title with 270 points while Kannur North stood second with 243 points. It is after a long gap Kannur North is loosing the coveted tilte. The hosts made this by their performances in the last two days of the event. Payyanur subdistrict also grabbed the champion title in the Balakalotsavam while they shared the champion title in the Sanskritotsavam with Taliparamba.

Madhu Alppadambu Bags Vailoppilli Award

Thrissur: Vailoppilli Smaraka Samithi of Thrissur selected young poet Madhu Alappadambu for this years Vailoppilli Memorial Literary Award. The collection of poems "Rathri Vandi" was selected for the award. The award includes Rs. 5000 and certificate. Dr Sukumar Azheekode will present the award at a function at Vailoppilli Hall of the Sahitya Academy on 18th January.

Madhu is the son of Karivellur Madhavan Namboothiri and Devaki Andarjanam.

Anniversary Of Kodakkad Conference Begins Tomorrow

Payyanur: The 65th anniversary of the historic Kodakakd conference will be celebrated at Kodakakd from tomorrow. The historic conference held at Kodakkad in 1939 had a very high impact on the social life of this region. Various peasant leaders of that time like NG Ranga, Kameshwar Rao, P Krishna Pillai, AKG, Keraleeyan, P Narayanan Nair, KPR Gopalan, Muhammad Abudl Rehman Saheb had participated in that conference. The conference was conducted under the leadership of AV Kunhambu, VV Kunhambu and TS Thirumumbu. Various trade union seminars, agricultural exhibition, painting exhibition etc are also arranged part of the celebrations. The celebrations will conclude on 18th January.
