Payyanur: Nalakath Soopy, the minister for education minister, inaugurated the 6th VHSE youth festival at Payyanur today. T.Govindan MP,KP Mohanan MLA, AD Mustafa MLA, Rajan Babu MLA,OV Narayanan-dist panchayath president,S.Jyothi-municipal chairperson, P.Balan Master , PP Karunakaran Master , Abdul Khadar Moulavi,Babu Gopinath and K.Raveendran also spoke at the function.

Payyanur: The sixth state VHSE youth festival will begin at Payyanur tomorrow. About 2000 students from 375 voccational higher secondary schools of the state will participate in the festival. Variuos competitions in 63 items will be held at six different venues arranged at Govt Boys High School, Gandhi Maidan and BEMLP School. A colourful procession will be held at Payyanur tomorrow evening to declare the opening of the festival. Nalakath Soopy, the education minister, will formally inaugurate the youth festival on 1st February at 10 am. K.Sudhakaran, minister for forests and sports, will inaugurate the closing cermony on 2nd February at 3.30 pm and Cherkalam Abdulla, the minister for local administration, will distribute the prizes to the winners.
Payyanur: The platinum jubilee of the historic KPCC conference held at Payyanur in 1928 will be celebrated at Vellikoth, Kanhangad. It was this conference ,presided over by Jawahar Lal Nehru ,which declared complete freedom as the ultimate target of Indian National Congress. The celebrations will be held in the third week of February with variuos functions like symposium,literary discussions, poetry-workshop etc. An organising committee was formed for the celebrations at a meeting held at Vellikoth P Smaraka High School.
Payyanur: KV Shiju(18),a first year degree student of Payyanur College died in a motor accident at Vilayancode near Pilathara yesterday morning. The mishap occured when the motorbike which Shiju was riding collided with a tempvan. The van after hitting the motorbike lost its control and also hit two other autorickshaws. Both drivers of the autos were admitted to Koyli Hospital, Kannur while one passenger of the auto is under treatement at Pariyaram Medical College.
Liju is the son of KV Narayanan, a leading contractor and businessman of Vilayancode and Chandramathi. Holiday was declared for Payyanur College today to mourn the death of Shiju.

Payyanur: TI Madhusoodanan has been reelcted as the secretary of DYFI Kannur district committee at its district conference held at Thalassery. Madhusoodanan is the vice chairman of the Payyanru Municipality.

Kannur: Noted journalist and the chief editor of Sudinam evening daily, Maniyeri Madhavan(65) died at Kannur yesterday. He was the son of Maniyeri Parvathi Amma and K Kunhambu Nair of Vellur, Payyanur. He started his career as Karivellur local reporter of Tozhilali daily and later the district reporter of Dinamani. He also worked as the assistant editor of Sudarasanam daily published by PVK Nedungadi.In 1977 he started Sudinam daily which gained much popularity in Kannur district later.
