Pooram Celebration Begins Today

Payyanur: All temples and kavus are ready for the celebration of Pooram festival. The nine day long festival, to propitiate Kamadeva ( the god of love), begins with the Karthika asterism and concludes on the pooram asterism of the Malayalam month of Meenam (Pisces). This year it will be from 25th March to 3rd April. During the festival days the image of Kamadeva (the god of love) is installed in every Hindu home and maidens offer pooja. The Pooram season is an occasion for rejoicing and merrymaking. interesting features of the Pooram festival are the poora vilakku,poorakanji, poorakkali and marathukali (scholarly debates on grammar, literature and mythology. Maruthukali is fed by two Panikkars -eminent artistes who are well versed in mythology, grammar and music . The main venue of Pooram festival in Kannur district are at Valapattanam Kalarivathukkal temple and Madayikavu. At Payyanur the major venue is at Annur Sri Talayanneri Pooomala Bhagavathy Kavu along with many other bhagavathy temples of the region.
