Payyanur: The Congress-led UDF government will bring up a Bill in the state assembly on November 22, to hand over the affairs of the Pariyaram Medical College back to the cooperative society, Cooperation Minister M V Raghavan said on Friday.
“The government is not in a position to financially assist the college to help attain the much-awaited Medical Council of India (MCI) recognition and, therefore, it proposes to bring up a Bill to hand over the college affairs back to the cooperative society," he said.
Earlier, Raghavan spoke to students and house surgeons, protesting for the past one week, seeking the support of the government and concerned authorities for setting right certain deficiencies pointed by a MCI team that inspected the college recently.
"A sum of Rs 24 crore is required immediately to meet the deficiencies already pointed out by the MCI team, which will make another inspection at the college on December 14," he said.
Efforts were being made to bail out the college from the present financial crunch through an aid of Rs 10 crore from the cooperative sector. However, he said, it would not be disclosed now from which source the money was being raised as "certain elements were bent upon blocking it."

MVR Visits Striking Pariyaram Medicos
Payyanur: Cooperation Minister M V Raghavan, who called on the agitating medicos of Pariyaram Medical College (PMC) at the Satyagraha pandal set up at the Stadium Corner, Kannur this morning, assured the students that the State Government would take necessary steps to obtain permanent recognition of Indian Medical Council (IMC) to the courses offered by the college. The Government will move a Bill in the State Assembly on November 22 in order to facilitate the handing over of the Medical College to cooperative sector, he said.
A new management under cooperative sector would give a facelift to the Medical College and would ensure recognition of IMC, he added.
“The UDF Government is committed to rescue the Medical College from crisis. The proposed administrative body will take steps to cut short the number of staff working in the college to save it from financial crisis,” he said. Raghavan later also held talks with staff members.
